This took about four hours from sketch to finish, using a Cintiq 12wx and Photoshop CS3. I must say that a Cintiq does save me lots of time. For that reason alone it's worth the asking price. I think. I don't know. It is pretty damn expensive.
Anyway, I was going for a mix between comic and realism, sort of like Frank Frazetta, but with saturated colors, and sort of a manga fusion, at least with the eyes. I like the end results. I wasn't sure about pink and yellow, but I think they go together well. They are really close to being complimentary colors.
I've been into big hips lately. Basically, I start with a basic skeleton. I've tried starting with flow lines and stuff, but that just doesn't work for me. I must start my drawings in a logical way, like I am a robot or something. After that I paint the base colors, called flattening in the comic industry. Then I paint very monochromatic to get the values and shapes of the body, muscles etc. After that I use layers or brushes set to soft light, multiply, and others, to add color variation. I use a lot of blues, purples, oranges, and reds for this. Then I go back to a normal brush to blend the colors better. I do a lot of adjustments in the image/adjustments area as I work.
